[h1] Step-by-Step Procedure[/h1]In order to recover a password, you must download a recovery image onto the ATM module that will erase the contents of nonvolatile RAM (NVRAM). To get this image, establish an FTP session to ftp.cisco.com and log in as c5k_atmp. Use your email address as the password. Enter the [b]get atm_911.cbi[/b] command. [/*][*]Download the ATM module recovery image on the Catalyst 5000 supervisor console by typing: [quote][b]download[/b] [i]host[/i] [b]atm_911.cbi[/b] [i]atm mod_num[/i] [/quote][/*][*]Wait for the module online message. At this time, the password is disabled and the NVRAM on the ATM module is erased. Reboot the Catalyst 5000. Use the following terminal settings: 9600 baud, no parity, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit [/*][*]Type [b]show module[/b] to determine the MSFC card on which to do password recovery. The MSFC module is in slot 15 or 16. [/*][*]Reset the MSFC module you want to do password recovery on. Use the [b]reset [/b]<mod> command to do this. [/*][*]Wait 5 seconds and then connect to the MSFC console using the [b]switch console[/b] command. [/*][*]After seeing the message "Connected to Router", issue a break sequence. The break key is a unique sequence that will break the MSFC into rommon. If this does not work, please refer to the [u]break sequence page[/u]. The MSFC will boot to a rommon> prompt. [/*][*]Type [b]confreg 0x42[/b] at the rommon> prompt to configure the MSFC to boot without its configuration. [/*][*]Display the current software in bootflash by issuing the [b]dir bootflash:[/b] command and record the current software version. Doing so will result in loss of configuration after the password recovery process. This will put you in enable mode and you will see the Router# prompt. [/*][*]Type [b]config mem[/b] or [b]copy startup-config running-config[/b] to copy the nonvolatile RAM (NVRAM) into memory. This is a crucial step. DO NOT save the configuration (do not use [b]write term[/b] or [b]copy running-config startup-config[/b]) [/*][*]Type [b]write terminal[/b] or [b]show running-config[/b]. At this point, you should see the full configuration with the unknown enable password or enable secret. All other interfaces are shut down. [/*][*]Type [b]configure terminal[/b] to make the necessary changes. The prompt is now hostname(config)# [/*][*]Type [b]enable secret[/b] <password>. Replace <password> with your password. [/*][*]Use the [b]no shutdown[/b] command on interfaces that are being used. If you use the [b]show ip interface brief [/b]command, every interface that you want to use should be up.
